Amuse Your Muse Monday with Rebecca of Songbead

Happy Monday! How are you getting on with January? I have officially decided that it is my *least* favourite month of the year so I am glad we are past the halfway point! Onwards to the Spring now please. I'm ready for a little sunshine!

Let's kick off this week with some beautiful handmade red Art Beads. Betsi shared some beautiful creations that she found online.

I found a few others to round out the post as well....

...and here's a very awesome/special/spectacular red Art Bead which I picked up this week.....

(Are you jealous?! ;-) )

Hope you are staying safe and warm this January! Looking forward to seeing what red Art Beads you find this week.....

January always puts me in a funk.

I am not sure if it is the after-holiday sugar high letdown or the disturbingly cold weather or the fact that I sometimes feel like I am in the exact same place as I was last year or what... but I seem to be stuck in a rut.

One way that I force myself out of the blahs is to rise to a challenge.

I decided to add a feature to my own blog that I call 30 Words Thursdays. I used to do this from time to time and I enjoyed it. I have always wanted to have something regular to look forward to, and this picture above taken on my cell phone (!) inspired me to make it real. All the pictures on my camera are of jewelry related items. That just isn't right. I am challenging myself to take a new picture every week and then write exactly 30 words about it. No more. No less. And it comes out very poetic, which is a bonus! The 30 Words Challenge is open to anyone at anytime. Join me!

At the beginning of this month I challenged myself come up with something for each of the eight color palettes from the 101 Bracelets, Necklaces & Earrings call for submission. I have done this for the past few years and I have even had two pieces make the covers, so I have a bit of a soft spot for this issue. It is a publication that really brings out the best in so many talented designers and I feel honored to have been a part of it. I like the framework of the color palettes they select each year for this issue as it gives me guidance but also freedom (if you like that sort of color inspiration, I invite you to join me in the monthly Pretty Palettes challenge I host on the Halcraft.com blog).

Last week I found out that they wanted to see all eight of the pieces that I submitted for further consideration. Woohoo! I have no illusions that they will select any or all of them, but it is a great affirmation that I am pointing my toes in the right direction.  ;-)

Facet Effects

Keeping up with the challenge to myself and the rut-getting-out-of, I set about to make at least one thing for each of the Stringing Summer calls for submissions. I am very excited about the themes: word jewelry, stackable bracelets, fabulous facets and upcycled jewelry. All in my wheelhouse! That will be an awesome issue.

I am sending in three pieces to them for further consideration, but that left a few things that did not get selected. But that is okay because that means I am free to submit them somewhere else, sell them in the Gallery Q or share them with everyone (or keep them for myself!). So next week I am planning a tutorial on this blog for one of them. Stay tuned for that!

For the fabulous facets category, I thought it would be a good idea to explore the faceted beads that I started making in November for the Art Bead Scene challenge. Do you remember those?

I wanted to make the same, glow-from-within rough faceted beads but in an ombre color palette. I decided to use Pantone's Radiant Orchid color as my starting point and made a set of five beads. I used them in this necklace with faceted links and some Imperial Jasper beads that I call 'The Many Facets of Orchid'.

The Many Facets of Orchid

Since it didn't get selected for Stringing, I decided to wear it today.

I love it!

Today I am offering these handmade beads on my website that I am calling Facet Effects in sets of four in whatever ombre color palette you like! I would love to make my first set for one of our Art Bead Scene readers who answers this question...

When you are stuck in a creative rut, what helps you out of it?

Introduction: Mary Harding

altered image of ceramic pieces being glazed in my studio

Hello to all you readers of Art Bead Scene.  My name is Mary Harding. I am delighted, excited and honored to tell you that I have accepted  Heather Powers' invitation  to become a  member of  the ABS Team.  I have long been a follower of this wonderful blog and cannot tell you how pleased I am now to be writing blogs posts here.

I thought in this first post I would tell you something about me.  I am a ceramic bead maker and have been since 1998.  Although I am mostly self-taught, I did major in English and Art History in college and lived in England and Germany for a number of years as a guest and  participant in their visiting artists programs. I moved back to the United States and Upstate New York afterwards and have since been focused on the land in this beautiful rural farming area.   Once I began making ceramic beads, and pendants I found that my interests and inspirations were nature inspired.

I love colors and enjoy hand painting the glazes onto my ceramic work.  I am especially interested in creating work that reflects the wild, native plants of where I live in Upstate New York.  The area is rich in pasture, woodlands and swamps.  It is these plants that I enjoy hanging out with for endless hours in my studio.  Since my studio is a long enough walk from my house, I see many of them each day as they grow and change along with the seasons of the year.  Right now there are only a few that have managed to stay above the thick layer of ice over our  land.

In addition to making ceramic beads, I enjoy learning about and experimenting with different media.  I like to
design jewelry using art beads and try out different techniques. My favorites are off loom beading and working with wire.

I am fortunate that I am able to share my experiments, skills and creations with others on my personal blog and each summer in the classes that I teach at the Thousand Islands Art Center in Clayton New York.

Here at the Art Bead Scene Blog I will be starting out writing some tutorials and participating in Inside the Studio write ups and giveaways. I look forward to your  input and would love to have you leave a comment about future blog posts you would like to see from me here at the Art Bead Scene.  I am always open to new ideas and suggestions.

Perfect Pairings :: Bay Moon Designs + Blu Mudd

Maybe it is because we got 7" of snow yesterday, but I am longing for warmth. This bracelet by Kathy Lindemer of Bay Moon Design caught my eye. With the emphasis on the sunny tones of yellow, orange and red, this pretty bracelet radiated tropical sunshine for me. I can picture this dragonfly flitting about on the textile by Lois Maillou Jones, landing on a leaf in the shimmering heat before lazily moving on. Makes me feel warm just thinking about it!

Hurray it's 2014!!
2013 felt like my life was a Push Me Pull You. We would push forward then get pulled backwards. I am so happy to be in a New Year!
2014 will be far superior to 2013.
I lost my job the last day of December and am now going through the stress of finding another job. In my head I'm screaming I don't want to work for anyone but myself again!! I need to be the only Looney Toon I'm dealing with and who appreciates what I have to offer. It's OK, if I take advantage of myself but I will give no one else the privilege to do that to me again.

I'm adjusting to being at home again. I started sketching ideas of new art to start on. Something I haven't had much time to do. The above sketch would be fish on a larger scale that could hang like a mobile and spin. I have another idea that hasn't made it to paper. Trying to think ahead and possibly sign up for more shows this year.
I will offer Free Shipping till the end of January so we can help each other out in this economy. Enter code SHIP4FREE in the shopping cart.

My Question is:
Are you happy to be in a New Year?
I know I am!!

Leave your answer to the question in the comments
and you could win Leaf Buttons!

Have a great day!!
Feeling Sassy as usual!
Tari Sasser
