Giveaway with a Little Help from our Friends in Beads 2011

"Friends, you and me...you brought another friend and then there were three.
We started our group, our circle of friends, and like that circle there is no beginning or end."
~Eleanor Roosevelt

Art Bead Scene is like that ever-widening circle of friends.

Every time someone joins as a follower, comments on a post or participates in a monthly challenge, the circle gets wider. And using art beads makes the circle grow deeper, expanding exponentially so that the relationships within this community are strengthened.

As a designer, I am always looking to the Art Bead Scene to introduce me to new art and art bead artists. There is something so special about using art beads in your work. You can see the hand of the maker all over each piece, and to hold one is to hold a tiny treasure that is suitable for display in any gallery. And every time you use an art bead, it is like adding another ripple to the circle, because often by using them you become more than just a buyer, a client, a number to the maker...you become a friend.

There is just one place that I go each year to find new art bead artists to start a friendship with, and that is the annual buyer's guide called Beads presented by Beadwork magazine.

I always cheer when I see the issue released as it truly is inspiring to see all of the best and brightest beads in one location. If you cannot make it to a bead show, then Bead 2011 is the next best thing. Over 330 new beads along with 15 projects by extremely talented designers is the focus. And with tools and trends explored along with ads for stores you may know about and some that may be new, this publication is always something that I hang onto for a long time.

This issue jam-packed with awesomeness and it is heavy on the art beads, which I particularly love. Since there were so many art beads all in one place, Art Bead Scene had a perfect opportunity to celebrate, especially since five of our contributing editors had pieces included in the issue. So, what is a party without treats? I put out a call to as many of the artists and companies that I could find and asked them to contribute to a giveaway in honor of all the beady goodness that is Beads 2011. I was overwhelmed by the response, and after fondling, er... admiring all the tiny packages that came my way, I can tell you that I honestly wish that I had the chance to win.

Danielle Fox and her staff have outdone themselves and rounded up tips, trends, tools and more to kick start your creativity. There are ten different trends happening in this issue and we have an artist or company in the giveaway to go with almost all of them. Just look at what you could win:

order your copy today!

So clean up that puddle of drool on your computer and enter to win this massive beady prize! Since I love to spoil my friends, you have three ways to enter, and each must be in a separate comment to count.

Chance #1: Answer one of the following questions:
  • Which trend are you most excited about from the ten in the issue?
  • If you have a copy of the issue, what is one bead artist that was new to you that you are most intrigued by and can't wait to try?
  • What is the reason that you use art beads in your designs?
Chance #2: Blog, Facebook Tweet, skywrite, take out a billboard or otherwise share your love for this giveaway to the rest of your world, then come back here and tell us what you did.

Chance #3: Here at Art Bead Scene, we consider our followers part of our circle of friends. You don't have to be a follower of the Art Bead Scene to win, but if you are a friend who follows us (nearly 1,900...that is some growing circle!), post a third comment for an additional chance.

I will choose a random winner of the entire prize package at midnight on May 30th and announce it during the monthly ABS challenge blog hop on May 31st.

Thanks for being a friend of Art Bead Scene!

Erin Prais-Hintz writes about all things that inspire her at Treasures Found::Inspiration Is Everywhere. Her jewelry designs are one-of-a-kind made one-at-a-time. She collects quotes and dust and invites you to send her your favorite (quote - not dust!) to enjoytheday@tesoritrovati.com.

I only started using art beads in my designs six months ago when I discovered the art bead scene blog. I am now hooked and have begun to hoard them. I love the creativity within each designer. It is amazing to me how someone can create , out of any material, a tiny piece of heaven called an art bead.

And for my third...I have to say that my favorite trend in here are the flowers...petals, leaves, modern & stylized or classic & rustic. I like that it can go either way but always feels feminine.

I am a fan of using art beads since I make them and then send them to my sister who then incorporates them into her unique jewelry. She is so talented... I signed her up for ABS e-mail and she has spread the word in her little Florida art colony on Pine Island.

Couldn't pass up a chance to enter... even if it is a long shot.

I'm really interested in the Skyborne and Customizable trends. Of course, I love winged things, but I really also like making things personal. If we are indeed, as designers, creating future heirlooms... don't we want our pieces to say something, to carry with them something of the person who made the work and who wears it?

Andrew Thornton said...

For a second shot at these goodies, I've updated my Facebook page and Twittered about the giveaway! Thanks so much for such a fabulous opportunity!

Hi from Nicki at Little Red Head. Oh my goodness 'what a gorgeous stash'!

The trend I am loving at the moment are the enamelled brass findings, they seem to be a more glam alternative to some of the verdigris finishes, although I do love those too. Mary Harding toggles are THE most gorgeous things ever, and I love all the Elaine Ray connectors as they are so timeless. I shall be looking out for those Marie dodd enamelled caps too, gorgeous. I would love to use more of these items in my jewellery making, but mostly see them all in Lorelei Eurto's designs (who's probably my favourite designer EVER) and such an inspiration to experiment with different colours and techniques! Love her work! Sorry went off on a tangent there, but she's so fab!

I have posted this on my personal facebook profile, on my littleredhead profile, on the Brisbane Handmade Facebook page, on 'Shop Contemporary Handmade's' facebook page and on my little red head blog.

I didn't discover art beads until about 3 years after I took a jewellery making course at a local community centre. Up till then, I was all about swarovski crystals and pearls. Artbeads may cost quite a bit - which means I use them judiciously - but I like the element of uniqueness they bring to my jewellery. They make a piece extra special and I especially like the idea that by incorporating them, I'm doing my bit to support all those artists/artisans who work so hard to get their creative voices heard.

I'm going to be blogging about this but will post that later...this giveaway pretty much made my jaw drop right open! What a fantastic haul and whoever wins is going to be the envy of many, many people.

I think my favourite trend from the issue is probably Beads with Culture or possibly Beads with Spirit. I love the idea of making something intimate that represents a country, time, or place that is distant to you; the same with an emotion or spirit that maybe seems far away, but can become close to you through an object.

I love using art beads because of their uniqueness in comparison to mass produced items. I make ceramic beads and I know that in that moment of creating thoughts are put into the process, dreams, hopes and sometimes even tears when a difficult time is happening. And that moment of creating something special has so much personality in it. I am sure others go through this and that makes all of our work special.

I picked door #2 first (though I'll be peeking behind doors 1 and 3 soon!). I posted the following on my Facebook, with a link to your page:
"I'm entering a contest at Art Bead Scene Blog to win a WHOLE slew of beadylicisous findings and jewlery notions! So, what are you seeing in jewelry today that you like? What are you seeing that is total crap? If I win... It's in your best interest....... ;) "

RME said...

(Inspired by Alicia Keyes Falling).....I kept on following in love with your beads......

I'm not much of a follower, but for a chance to meet others, and to further my own skills and possibly win the fabulous drawing, I will follow along. :)

I've been making jewelry, home decor and object a'art out of found items, trinkets and peices of nature since I was a child. I've always been drawn to Art Nouveau. More recently, I've been blending more industrial bits into this occasionally branching over into what is now termed "Steampunk." I like to blend the industrial with the natural. I think that the two together can be really quite beautiful.

Chance #1:

I use art beads in my designs because I love to support those individuals who are doing what they love in a world of massed-produced items. When someone asks me about a piece at a show, I am so proud to say, "This was made by a creative individual named..." and point them to the person's blog or web page. A lot of bead artisans/artists create using environmentally safe, nontoxic materials. They focus on quality and create magnificently beautiful things. I am proud to use their work in my jewelry designs.

Great questions! I am so excited to take part in this massive giveaway!

I am most excited about the "Chain and Fiber" trend. The combination gives any jewelry the "unexpected" factor and breathes excitement into a creation.

Melissa said...

Chain and fiber for sure - I've been using a TON of chain lately in my current work! I'm also pretty enamored of those spectacular glass headpins too, just started seeing those around this year.

Hello! :)
I'm already a follower :)
I create art beads, and use art beads in my work, because they have a bit of soul. I like seeing things that I haven't seen before, and knowing that some creative individual has put a little bit of themselves into their work :)

Great competition, I wil go and tweet now :)

Beads au Naturel is my favorite trend - though I love many different artistic expressions, from industrial to glam, if I have to pick just one, it will alays be Mother Nature; from leaves and trees to rocks and gemstones, from cloud formations and sunsets to waves at the beach, I am fortunate to live smack-dab in the heart of an ever-changing display of her natural artistic genius. Every day arrives with awe-inspiring, new shapes, colors, and textures.

Thanks SO much for this FABULOUS giveaway!

My favorite new trend would have to be fiber (chain and fiber). I find the myriad uses of fiber as a new texture in jewelry making to be quite exciting.
