Inside the Studio with Rebecca of Songbead - Au Revoir but not Good-Bye

Each week one of our contributors gives you a sneak peek into their studio, creative process or inspirations. We ask a related question of our readers and hope you'll leave comments! As an incentive, we offer a prize each week to encourage you to use that keyboard and tell us what you think. The following week a winner is chosen at random from all eligible entries. And here are the results from last week!

Congratulations to Nan Smith!  You have won of a $20 gift certificate to Humblebeads. Please email Heather Powers to claim your prize.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, well - here we are; a day I knew would come at some point but it's sort of taken even me by surprise! About a month ago, I came to the realisation that my days weren't looking quite how I wanted them to - not just my schedule but my priorities needed to shift. Or in fact, that they had started to shift already and I needed to keep up with them - and to make some changes to allow me to do so. And that very sadly means signing off from the Art Bead Scene team, which I've been an enthusiastic member of since back in 2011 - almost 4 and a half years now, can you believe?!
My first Art Bead Scene post - a tutorial for this cute bangle, featuring a lampwork tab from Helen Chalmers - still one of my favourite bead artists.
When I started writing for Art Bead Scene, things were pretty different for me on a day-to-day basis. I was living down in England, and heavily involved in teaching - both of jewellery-making and music, primarily singing. My time was split about 60:40 music:beading, and I did a few craft fairs here and there - but my focus was mainly on the education side of things, which I loved. I often taught three jewellery classes a week, and published frequently for magazines - not least for the now sadly-missed Beads and Beyond (gone but not forgotten!).
The beautiful classroom in Manchester where I was lucky enough to teach from.
Over the next couple of years that balance switched - I started doing a lot more jewellery teaching and less music teaching, until we moved unexpectedly in 2013 to Belfast due to my partner's work. Which basically meant I had to give up ALL my teaching and go full-time with jewellery - bead selling at The Curious Bead Shop which I'd launched the previous year, jewellery making for fairs (which I was now doing a lot more of) and my online shop, and designing for magazines.
March 2013 - cover girl at Beads and Beyond!
2014 saw a move back to Edinburgh, my home city (again, following my partner for work!) which brought me closer to a lot of the craft fairs and art markets I'd previously travelled to take part in, and I've gradually become more and more involved in the designer-maker scene here in Scotland, picking up stockists across the country and taking classes in new skills (my own little jewellery bench actually arrived in the post today!). I'm still selling beads too, including my own handwoven {song}beads, and I *love* seeing what other people do with my carefully curated selections, but I've become less involved in the education side of things. This is of course, not least because of the silly amount of moves we've done, along with the closing of several UK magazines over the past few years (which is incredibly sad), but I now find myself after 10 years of focussing on what other people are creating, needing to carve a little more time and mental space to focus on what I'M creating.
My stand at the West End Fair this past summer.
I wouldn't describe how I'm feeling as burnt out exactly, but give me a year or two and I think I'd be there. Time to pare things down, sharpen my focus and simplify. I'm sure you can all relate - if not in your jewellery making then perhaps in other parts of your life. The need for simplicity; the need for honed-in intention - and yes, perhaps to allow myself to focus on my own artistry, for a little while at least. I hope that doesn't sound selfish. Sometimes we need to take the time to fill our own well before we can begin to let others draw from it again.
Some of my own handwoven {song}beads.
I cannot tell you how much I will miss being a part of this incredible group of women. So much talent here - Julie did a wonderful post here which if you missed, I thoroughly recommend taking a stroll through it - that really captured some of the incredible art and spirit that these ladies have within themselves. Thank you especially to Heather for inviting me to be a part of this team - I do hope that you will have me back for guest posts sooner rather than later! And you'll definitely see me around as a reader - and oh, maybe I'll find the time to actually take part in our challenges more often! That's a thought I certainly relish.
Things to come...?
Along with hopefully posting more over on my own personal blog - something I sorely neglected last year, and have resolved to do better with this year. Not least, because I love it! To take the time to write about making and designing, and contemplate the nature of creativity - well, that serves me very well. I've been a creative soul since I arrived on this planet in one way or another, and songbead blog readers may have noticed more wordy posts from me this year, as I try and turn intention into action over there. Please don't be a stranger - I love to hear from readers over there, and I certainly won't be a stranger over here on Art Bead Scene! It's definitely au revoir, not good-bye.
I still have a few more posts scheduled to write for you - I wanted to eke out my departure! - so I won't be fully signing off until the end of the month. But this is my last Inside the Studio, and I wanted to take the opportunity to not only say au revoir, but also to say a huge THANK YOU to you the readers, for being such an important - vital! - part of this journey, and being a part of our Art Bead Scene family. Readers, commenters, challenge-enterers - you're all wonderful, and I thank you for making being part of this fantastic team such a huge pleasure!
I had to finish with a piece of jewellery, didn't I?! A few art beads in this recent one...! Me, Claire Lockwood, Helen Chalmers and Lorelei Eurto
Time for one last giveaway from me - and I'm offering a £15 voucher for either Songbead or The Curious Bead Shop - your choice. Tell me; what is one thing you feel shifting in your life right now?
Au revoir, you wonderful lot. Thank you for being amazing!
What do you pair your art beads with? - with Rebecca of Songbead
This is a surprise post from me, as we had to shift the schedule around a bit due to one thing or another. I had a ponder about what I should write about - new art beads? Beady ways to find inspiration? Art beads that I'm drooling over? (Yes, spot the beady theme!) I had a look through my most recent images, and the first thing I saw was a set of earring pairs that I made last night and managed to snap this morning, waiting to be edited. And what do you know, the art beads are from one of this month's sponsors - Indian Creek Art Glass, or Outwest. It seemed that the universe was giving me my post topic. Although, looking at the post title, you may be wondering how I got from Indian Creek Art Glass to What do you pair your art beads with? Bear with me.
At the start of this year, I made myself a promise - that I would make more jewellery aka make more time for creative play; for joy - essentially, more 'me' time. Creativity is at the core of my being - I know that so many of you will feel the same - it's why I am an artist, and why I am a musician (Songbead - geddit?). But so often, as full-time creatives, the actual creative process gets lost along the way - behind other essential things; Facebook updates, blog posts, packing orders, ordering new supplies, chasing up suppliers, Instagram etc etc etc...Yes, these things all need doing. But we wouldn't be in this game if it wasn't for that core, essential part - the creating itself.
Post-manic craft fair, it's safe to say I was at that danger point of running around, doing everything *but* creating. So last night, I dug out a special order that had arrived during the fair, one that I had been carrying around with me for a while, in the way that you do - anyone else do that with new, special art beads ever? No, just me then....?!
Some of the beads which arrived were from Julie's Rustic Sedona series. Different colours from these - but really, aren't they rather special? Can you see why my fingers clicked 'BUY' immediately when I saw them? I'm sure you can.
I love rustic, but I can't always do this rustic. I adore rusticity but sometimes feel out of my depth with it - it's something that the cool kids can play with but when I try, it comes out lumpy.
But Julie's beads had spoken to me, and I knew that I could turn them into something that was both worthy of their rusticity but also felt like 'me'. That felt 'Songbead'. It's always good to try something new, to push yourself out of your comfort zone a little - but it's still got to feel like it's coming from a genuine place, hasn't it?
I knew that the key to working with these beads was finding the right partners for them. Usually, frequent readers will know, I reach for my many, many (MANY!) boxes of Czech glass. I love it so much, I opened my own shop! But I felt that this wouldn't be quite right here. That they would be too much in my comfort zone. And that I wouldn't be able to make them work as I wanted to with Julie's beautiful beads. So instead, I dug out a different box - my box of recycled Ghanian glass.
Some of the wonderful beads from Ghana Treasures.
Seriously, YUM - right? Rustic, recycled and in a myriad of colours. Perfect for me (and probably many of you too!)  - and their grungy texture the ideal foil for Julie's Rustic Sedona beads.
I added in a mixture of ceramic discs and also some pretty lampwork rings from Earthshine, and here's what happened...
You can find all three pairs here in my etsy shop.
I actually didn't originally embellish the earwires, but this morning I looked at those Vintaj brass loops, and they looked a bit naked. A few brass facets and wire later, and they looked much happier to me.
What do you like to pair your art beads with? Do you listen to what they have to say and sometimes find yourself reaching for something surprising? Let me know in the comments below!
Amuse the Muse - Autumnal Beads - with Rebecca of Songbead
Hello everyone! Me again, here with a super rundown of gorgeous handmade Autumnal beads for you. And this week's roundup is extra special! It's time for
Art Bead Scene does Autumnal Beads
Yep, I've got gorgeous beads from all of us in the team, ready to inspire your Autumnal designs. (And if you left a link/comment last week - thank you! I will be sharing them in next week's Muse post, never fear.)
Humblebeads. I adore feathers; I adore colour - what's not to love here?
Julie Wong Sontag - Uglibeads - these have sold but Julie has more work coming up this week! Keep your eyes peeled - you've got to be super quick to snag an UgliBead!
Tari Sasser - I absolutely love the delicate texture of these leaf buttons. She's got them in a whole range of tones.
More gorgeous work from Heather Humblebeads. Don't you just adore the colours and the translucent quality of these leaves?
I think we get rain too often here in the UK to smile every time - but Heather Swoondimples' work never, ever fails to make me smile. Her shop is closed right now but will be opening again really soon!
I absolutely adore the contrasting glazes of Michele's leaf pendant! Very special.
It's good to remember that Autumn isn't just about greens and browns but also vibrant, warm tones too. This glorious pendant is from Mary Harding.
Look to the earth for Autumnal inspiration! Claire's toadstools are just pure fun. I love their glossy heads especially.
I've plenty of colours to choose from in my beaded bead selection, but these Turquoise Moss Picasso rounds say 'Autumn' to me....
....and every starring art bead needs a good supporting cast! Some of my favourite new beads in The Curious Bead Shop.
I think those large Glowing Ember Blooms above would be the perfect match for Erin's very special leaf pendant! Again, I'm going to bang on about the glowing colours here.
Erin has a set of these - I honestly can't pick my favourite. I'd love to create a set from these! (And check out one of these lovelies in action featured on one of my favourite blogs too!)
Another very special pendant from Mary Harding. Again, colour - but look at the torn textural edges! Just incredible.
Another gorgeous Autumnal-toned piece from Heather Swoondimples. The perfect rusty, October-y orange! And isn't the light in this shot rather wonderful too?
I had to save this one til last. Wouldn't you love to create something with Tari's wee alpaca? Too cute!
And now for the BeadBlogger Links. Have a great week everyone!
Amuse the Muse - Autumn/Fall Beads - with Rebecca of Songbead
Hello all! It's Monday - and by golly, it's SEPTEMBER. How on earth did that happen? I am sure I say that every month but really, September? Autumn just around the corner?? I blinked and missed the summer, that's for sure. Now, I know all of you lot, especially in North America, are going to tell me how excited you are for Fall/Autumn - but that's because you get bright, crisp, low-lit crunchy Autumn days that just don't seem to happen very often here in the UK. One day I will venture to New England and see the leaves, I will I will I will......By the time Autumn gets going here, it's more rain, rain, cold and a bit more rain....the leaves are a lot less enticing when then are sludgy rather than crispy!
But enough of my complaining about the nip in the air. I know that for many of you, it's your favourite season. And I can't blame you when I see pictures of that elusive perfect Autumn day. They are pretty special! And so September's theme is going to be Autumn/Fall beads. Yay!
Here's what I found for you for this week:
A very special set from Naos Glass
Are they art beads? I'm not sure but these are handmade and definitely super-fun! From The Felting Dorcas. I think they would add a special touch to any jewellery they were used in.
Seriously, I could feature Donna Millard's beads every.single.week. EVERY FLIPPING WEEK! How do I not own any of her beads?! This is a jaw-droopingly awesome set from Donna, as usual.
One of my own favourite art bead artists, Beads by Earth Tones. I LOVE these sweet owls, and Alison just keeps bringing them out in new cute colours!
Nancy Adams makes some of my most favourite ceramic beads ever ever ever! Yes, I know that's not good English, but it's true. She's a truly amazing artist. And she loves house rabbits too! Round Rabbit Extra
Another sweet owl to round off this collection. Isn't he sweet? From the talented hands of Cynthia Thornton.
Which ones is your favourite? And do you have your own favourite Autumn/Fall beads to share? Please leave links in the comments - I can't wait to see!
Hello from the West End Fair, Edinburgh!
Hello from the West End Fair, Edinburgh! It's my turn on the blog today, and so I thought I'd share a little of my day with you. Not just my day in fact, but my month - this fair runs from the 8th to the 30th August, every day from 11 - 6! Phew. Here are a few snaps from the show today...
My stall, looking (hopefully!) bright, colourful and cheery.
Perhaps slightly less so, now you can see the weather....it's rather soggy! It was gorgeous sunshine yesterday, I promise - hopefully more of that to come.
My facing neighbour, Ulrike, who makes the most amazing felted artwork! Woolly Felted Design.
Beautiful felted flower brooches
My diagonally-opposite neighbour - Jen Cunningham - an amazing silversmith who makes gorgeous landscape-inspired jewellery.
Edinburgh landscape cuff
Dark Skies Jewellery - I just love Diane's colours!
Helix Nebula pendant - see what I mean about the colours?
Nameless Wonders - Karen makes the most awesome, quirky collectable animals! I have the cheekiest mole at home from her.
Blue tweed cat. HOW cute?!
Someone who really needs no introduction on this blog...
Can you see who it is?
This artist doesn't just make lampwork beads for you and me to work with...
She also turns her own glass art into beautiful, colourful jewellery herself...
But don't worry, she's got beads on her stand as well!
Yep, it's Helen Chalmers. (Needless to say, I probably have almost as many Helen Chalmers lampwork beads on my stand as she does....)
If you are in Scotland and anywhere near Edinburgh, I hope you will pop along and visit us here at the West End Fair, behind St John's at the west end of Princes Street!
