Art Bead Scene 7th Birthday Bash!

March 12, 2007 marked the beginning of the Art Bead Scene.

The brainchild of Heather Powers of Humblebeads and Bead Cruise fame, the Art Bead Scene was billed as "an interactive blog with the goal of uniting bead artists of all materials and the jewelry designers who use art beads in their work." That is exactly what the original cast of characters provided, and what we still strive to do today.

The original team members included some rock stars in the beading world: Cindy Gimbrone, Lynn Davis, Jennifer Heynen, Lorelei Eurto, Melanie Brooks, Tari Sasser and Heather Powers. Over the years we have had an all-star line-up of members that included bead artists, color gurus, book authors and artisan designers from around the world. Our current team of art bead enthusiasts include: Erin Prais-Hintz, Marie-Noel Voyer-Cramp, Rebecca Anderson, Brandi Hussey, Mary Harding, Ema Kilroy, Claire Lockwood, Kaushambi Shah, along with our founding members Tari Sasser and Heather Powers.

I know that for my own experience, it wasn't until I somehow stumbled on the Art Bead Scene in 2009 that I had even heard of it. I am not even sure how. But it was likely that I followed a rabbit hole from one blog link to another until I stopped here. That was about the time when the ABS went from offering monthly challenges that seemed a bit more technique based, to the current model of selecting art work to frame our inspirations. Putting the Art in Art Bead! That certainly set this space apart from other inspirational blogs.

And for me, that is what turned a lightbulb on in my brain... that my work need not just be about pretty things, but that there could be a real story to be told through the art beads, the master art and the way that I chose to create my jewelry. That was indeed a revelation to me and has set me down the path to where I am today and where I am going. Plus I was introduced to art that I had never seen before and it was like I could see a door opening in front of me with a beautiful new vista. And just like you, dear reader, I started using those monthly prompts to jump-start my creativity and push me into different directions.

March 2009  -  The one and only time I was selected as the Featured Artist of the Week - Erin Prais-Hintz, Tesori Trovati
I remember most vividly the day that I was selected from the Flickr pool to be the Featured Artist of the Week inspired by the painting of red koi fish by Matisse. That may have been the one and only time that my work was selected, but it completely changed the way I created. I didn't win anything other than the recognition of my peers - and I consider all of our readers my peers - but it was still a thrill I would write home about. I wear this necklace to this day, and it remains one of my most successful and oft-requested designs. I have made this same necklace in many different art beads over the years and to me it marks an important turning point in my journey. And I have Art Bead Scene to thank for that.

The most obvious push for me came in the form of introducing me to these mini-works of art called Art Beads. Before the Art Bead Scene, I saw beads and materials as more color or texture based, simply there to support the overall design, and I don't think I ever paid more than $2 for one bead. After I found Art Bead Scene, I immersed myself in the world of the bead artist, marveling at the detail, construction, design sense, color palette and emotion that was conveyed through each one I held. And once I started buying them - and getting over my initial sticker shock - there was no going back. Especially when I held them in my hands.

Each new acquisition of an art bead, whether from a new-to-me bead artist (and I find a new one every day!) to the ones that I keep coming back to time and time again (I'm looking at you, Miss Heather!) becomes a treasured part of my studio, my designs and even my life. I treasure that I have become friends with bead makers the world over, and it gives my work an incredibly personal detail when I can tell my client that I know this artist, I have met them personally, or I have even visited their studio and that they are my friends.

Is it odd that an online community has come to be so important to me? I hope not. I have formed some of the most lasting friendships with bead artists and jewelry designers the world over through my connections here.  This place has become a very important part of my life and I can't imaging a day without it. Today I am so absolutely hooked on art beads and if this is a sickness, I don't want the cure! (Are you with me?)

We know that you all share our passion for this art of the miniature. We know you create beautiful works of art using art beads for personal adornment, self-expression and pure joy. We thank you for your continued support and encouragement of the Art Bead Scene, expanding this community to be worldwide, so supportive and creative. We pledge to continue to bring you all the inspiration that we can cram in this little community we have created. We have grown from a handful of readers to over 3,000 readers each day and would love to welcome more art bead artists and designers who share our passions. And most of all, we are spurred on by the creative ways you share art beads with the world.

What is a birthday party without gifts?

Happy Birthday ABS!! I came upon ABS exactly as you described and followed right away. I have been a sponsor and I actually had one of my clasps featured in the Perfect Pairings!I love seeing how designers interpret the art work and I get ideas and inspiration to interpret in my own work. I don't always comment but I always read! And thanks for the giveaway.

I stumbled upon ABS because of a bead soup photo. Omg! Little bowls of coordinating beads! I just collect and sculpt beads, so much fun to sort and resort! I know, I'm freak ;) Love seeing all the creations with beads ABS jewelry designers come up with! :)

Many happy returns of the day! I am a follower and found you while looking for inspiration online. Thanks for a smashing giveaway! I hope I got it right that I have to comment as many times as I do one of the above to become eligible, so I'll be back :)

I bought my first art bead to participate in an ABS challenge and now I am hooked. And I already own a clasp by one of the sponsors. Best wishes!

A very Happy Birthday to ABS!
I don't remember when I stumbled on to this amazing place but I do know it changed how I look at beads. I had only used gemstones then but my eyes were opened to art beads. It was like the heavens opened up in song for me and my jewelry took on a whole new look. I want to thank all the past an present artists that share inspiration and tutorials and so much more just for us.

Thanks for hosting this party!

Happy birthday ABS! I have been participating in this wonderful challenge since December 2012. The challenge has been a huge help to me in a number of ways. One of the best outcomes for me has been learning to use and create a color palette. I always wait to see what Brandi comes up with before I firm up my design. I also use some software to create my own when I need help with colors. I have learned about some art works and artists. I have seen some gorgeous jewelry and learned new techniques. I have been exposed to some beautiful art beads and artists. Lucky me has even one a few of those beads along the way. You can see this challenge has had a huge impact on me. So glad you all sponsor this!

Hi there--I recently bought Lorelei Eurto's book about bohemian jewelry and discovered the world of jewelry-making and beading! Shortly thereafter I discovered this blog via a Google search. I love reading the posts and using the photos of jewelry posted as inspiration.

When I found this blog, I subscribed to it (so I now "follow" it). And I posted about and linked to this post on my Facebook timeline.

So I've met 3 of the 4 requirements!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Happy Birthday, ABS!

I don't even remember when or how I found my way here, but ever since I've been an avid reader and following of this lovely blog filled with creativity, inspiration and gorgeous eye candy! It's also especially been an inspiration for me to create my own beads and components, even though I rarely have had the time/suplies to really dive into it (still on the experimental/exploaring stage, looking for the right material for me).

Happy Birthday ABS!!! I think I found ABS through one of the contributors blogs and was so haopy that I had. I love the unique and different and that is exaxtly what art beads do for me. I have to admit that I hoard my art beads and keep them for special designs. I think that is a favorite pass time for me finding a new designer. Thank you for the last seven years it has been wonderful.

Hmmm, when did I discover ABS? Probably soon after I discovered the internet and joined Blogger (May 2012). As a matter of fact, I started my blog a few months later specifically to participate in a monthly challenge here. I bought my first camera to party with, too. Late bloomer. I would guess ABS has had a profound influence on my growth as an artist, and I love discovering art, beads and stories here. Thanks for the lovely way to celebrate your milestone, ladies :)

Happy Birthday ABS: I am a follower, have been for 6-8 months. I'm not really sure how I found you. Perhaps several times during the past year. I am a fan on Heather Powers, I have her book: Nature Inspired Jewelry. I'm also a fan of Lorelei Eurto and Erin Prais-Hintz, have the book Bohemian Inspired Jewelry, as well as Lorelei's e-book about creating asymmetrical jewelery! I'll pin some prizes and come back later.

I suspect I found Art Bead Scene through Lorelei Eurto. I fell in love with her jewelry, and then saw that she posted the artists who made the gorgeous beads. I visited every artist's site she mentioned because I never saw an art bead I didn't love! It really opened up a great world of making things based on art in addition to the beads themselves - a painting, a song, a book. Great fun. Happy Birthday, ABS! Thanks to all the editors for their work, and thanks for a great giveaway!

Wow, want an achievement, Happy Birthday. I found Art Bead Scene after buying a bracelet from Daisychain Designs who had made it for your May 2012 challenge. Thank you ABS for your inspiration and ongoing advice.

Since then I have bought, traded and coveted lots of artbeads. I have even started making my own little treasures!!! I am so excited about this, I am working with polymer clay and I can't keep my hands out of it. Every chance I get I am creating something in clay and I LOVE it! I think I discovered the blog from one of the blogs of its contributors, and it must have been at least 2 years since I am following it :-)
Thank you all for the regular posts, the inspiration and the chance to get to know the work and personalities of the wonderful artisans featured in your posts.
Love to all

Happy birthday ABS. I think I became a follower of this blog by reading YOUR blog, Erin. I want to join the giveaway bash. Art Bead Scene has inspired me to use art beads for my best projects, not necessarily the ones I sell or make for blog challenges, but the ones I give to family or friends, the ones that have meaning. One of these days, I'll be in a better spot and will be able to use more of them. It always makes me happier to use an art bead in a project.

I found ABS through an interest in Heather Power's Humblebeads blog. I loved the help and encouragement I ground here. I really liked meeting new artist through the blog. One of my favorites was Salvage Sparrow and I donated to a fund for her because of her horrific auto accident...it felt like family. Thank you all so to the contributors. I was even lucky enough to win a monthly challenge several years ago...so let's celebrate. Happy b-day ABS

I "discovered" this blog at Heather's fall retreat when you guys brought it up. I've been following along and have actually made a couple pieces inspired by the artwork. I really love art beads and love that this blog has introduced me to even more artists to buy yummy stuff from.

Finally, I first discovered Art Bead Scene in 2012 and loved the monthly art piece as a creative inspiration because I'm an art history major!
