Pantone Fall Color Inspirations

I haven't even started enjoying summer yet and fall is already on the horizon. Actually, more than fall - Bead Fest in Philadelphia and thinking ahead to fall designs for the show is on the horizon!

When I was designing a new line of beads for fall and samples for an upcoming event I turned to several sources for my inspiration. And when I was struggling with colors, I pulled out the Pantone Fall 2015 top 10 colors and went to town!

The Pantone palette this season is inspired by the evolving landscape and finds it's inspiration in what they are calling haute hippie, with roots from fashion from the 70's. I really like the muted colors as a starting point.

You can read the color report here and see some Pinterest inspiration here. What do you think? Any color calling your name? For me, I love Biscay Bay, Cashmere Rose and Oak Buff - what a combo!

Fall Color Trends

Summer is giving us her last farwell this weekend and my thoughts are rushing ahead to fall and all the inspiration and beauty that autumn has to offer. Along with being inspired by the color expert Mother Nature proves to be, I'm also seriously inspired by the Fall 2013 Pantone Color Trend Report.

The image above is from Brandi Hussey's amazing blog post on color palettes using this season's trendy colors. Run over there right now to check it out!

I was inspired this weekend to create a few bracelets featuring a few color trend palettes. You can find the tutorial to this Hidden Clasp Bracelet here.

Are you digging the fall Pantone colors? Does one jump out at you as a must have for your fall designs? I have to say, I'm in love with all of them!

Pantone's 2013 Fall Colors

Pantone released their 2013 Fall Color picks back at the beginning of February, but I've been sitting on this post for a couple months now. Mostly because I really loved the Spring Colors and I wanted to enjoy them for a while. And partly because I didn't want to think about fall yet.

But because creatives work several months in advance, and some of you might already be working on (or planning) fall pieces and shows, let's go ahead and talk about the fall colors.

Very simply put, I love them. Love them. Take a look:

Overall, they've got a cooler tone to them, but a few are still nice and saturated (my favorite kind of color). Compared to Fall 2012, I like these colors better. They're more saturated and closer to colors I personally favor, where Fall 2012 seemed a little dull to me. I'm also loving pretty much every shade, versus last fall, when I didn't immediately react to choices like Honey Gold or Rhapsody. What do you think about this year's picks?

What I'm especially loving are the quasi-neutrals they included: Linden Green, Deep Lichen Green, Turbulence, and Carafe. I had a feeling those four colors will be so beautiful next to any and all of the other fall colors, so I starting playing with those first.

And I think I'm right - those neutrals/quasi-neutrals look fantastic with pretty much anything they're paired with, which is great for color lovers like us since we can match up any other color to one of them and have it look good. Fall is usually when I start reaching for neutrals/quasi-neutrals more, so having more than one option is nice, too.

When I was playing with the swatches, I did have one surprise: I kept reaching for Vivacious a lot. I knew I'd be reaching for Samba and Koi, as those are deeper, richer versions of Poppy Red and Nectarine (which I'm a big fan of), and I love pretty much any blue, so Monaco Blue was a given. But Vivacious caught me off guard.

At first, I didn't think I'd like it much, but the more I look at it, the more I think it's beautiful. And it pairs really well with other colors, especially Deep Lichen Green, Turbulence, and Carafe. Those are my favorites to use with Vivacious because they really let it shine without taking anything away from it.

So while I obviously used Vivacious a lot, I also had fun pairing up the other colors, too (can you tell?). I can't get enough of the blue-gray Turbulence, or the gray-greenish Deep Lichen Green. If I had to pick a favorite neutral, it's a dark gray, so it's fun to have two shades to play around with.

Your turn: what's your favorite Fall 2013 color? Favorite pairing?

Fall Pantone Color Trends: Sensible and Spirited

Every month, Etsy's blog puts out a list of the upcoming trends that they are seeing (or are looking for) in merchandising, things like magic and owls, letters and symbols, feathers and lace, or personalization and found objects. I have not really delved into staying too much ahead of the curve when it comes to hot trends with my new 'simple truths' components, but it would probably be a good idea if I would like to continue with them!

One of the things on their list is following the latest Pantone color trend report. According to Pantone, this fall they are inspired by "The Art of Color," so what better thing to be inspired by than art beads that follow those trends! I love to shop on Etsy so I thought that I would take their latest trend topic and see what I could find that would interpret these colors in art beads specifically.

Of these colors, Pantone says this: "Taking cues from the great masters, sepia tones of Old Hollywood, Chinese opera, cityscapes and countryside, designers are paying close attention to texture, contrast and color for fall 2011." I couldn't agree more! And this palette is considered "Sensible and Spirited."
A little about the new fall colors:

bamboo - an earthy mustard color, very exotic; pairs well with phlox, teal, honeysuckle
emberglow - a soft salmon that glows with life; works with coffee liquer, deep teal, phlox
honeysuckle - a vibrant pink punctuation point; combine with cedar, bamboo, nougat
phlox - a magically deep purple tone; add it to cedar, emberglow or bamboo
cedar - a soothing misty green color; pair it with deep teal or orchid hush
deep teal - think dark sea hues; looks great with coffee liquer and nougat as well as bamboo
coffee liquer - milk chocolate with a kick; this brown is the new black and goes with everything!
nougat - just the color I like my coffee; delicious with emberglow or honeysuckle
orchid hush - gray with soft orchid undertones; this new neutral goes with everything in the palette
quarry - a quiet blue gray; try it with nougat and coffee liquer or honesuckle and phlox

And here is my Etsy Treasury, filled with my tried and true favorites for art beads, plus the added bonus of new-to-me bead artists (I feel a need to go on an Etsy binge!):

The question is, do people follow these color trends when creating jewelry or shopping for it? Are they stocking up their wardrobe with honeysuckle sweaters and cedar shirts and coffee liquer pants and need accessories for it? Or do you think that these are just a gimmick?

I have never been very good with following trends and prefer to stay in my own comfort zone, but I might be inspired to add a few touches of these colors into my line of pendants and components, and surprisingly found that I already gravitated to some of these colors! It might be a good idea for those of us who sell on Etsy to add some of the hot color words to our tags, whether we make beads or jewelry with beads from other artists. I found that some people had done this in their listings and that made the job of searching by these colors a whole heckuva lot easier!

If nothing else, these Pantone Fall Color trends might inspire me to label things in a different way to take advantage of the trends. After all one person's purple is Pantone's phlox!

2010 Color of the Year!

Turquoise
“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”
To read the entire article from Pantone, visit this link.

Add in splashes of red with turquoise for a vintage inspired look.

Mix turquoise with bronze and copper for an earthy feel.

Add blue, cream and brown for a surf and sand combination.

Green and yellow combined with turquoise add a playful spring quality to a color palette.

Beads featured are from my Humblebeads Etsy shop.

Pantone Color Report Spring 2010: Splashes of Sunshine

This is the Pantone Color Report for Spring 2010. As you can see, the colors are bright and fun, Summery and remind me of a nice Caribbean vacation but with a few muted and earthy tones mixed in. These are perfect colors to work with and as it turns out, I had just about every color in my bead stash.
I had fun putting them all together into a bead organizer. See below!

Then I went back through my stash and pulled out some art beads that would go with the color choices here. I labeled them for your convenience.

Just writing up this post was inspiring and I really wish I could stay home and bead.
But I'm keeping these out so that when my muse hits, they'll be at an easy reach.
I hope that you feel inspired to put together some fun and bright designs using
these color ideas. I think they'd even go well all together in once piece.
Okay don't get crazy, Lorelei.
:)
