Win a Signed Copy of the Bead-Making Lab

I'm so excited about the release of my 3rd book, the Bead-Making Lab. I had such a blast creating projects using everything from polymer clay to paper mache, from rope to wire, to shrink plastic, felt, resin, stones and wood and so much more!

I created 52 projects - you could do one a week if you felt ambitious! The projects are geared toward beginners and all with materials found in your local craft store.

Along with the projects there are interviews sprinkled throughout the book with professional beadmakers.

If you have ever wanted to try your hand at making your own beads, this book is filled with inspiration and ideas!

You can win a sign copy in two places:

Each week one of our contributors gives you a sneak peek into their studio, creative process or inspirations. We ask a related question of our readers and hope you'll leave comments! As an incentive, we offer a prize each week to encourage you to use that keyboard and tell us what you think. The following week a winner is chosen at random from all eligible entries. And here are the results from last week!

This week's winner is Lynda of Fresh Baked Designs. Congratulations! You have won a $25 gift certificate for Swoondimples! Please contact Heather to claim your prize!

Is it a little late to be wishing you all a happy new year? I hope you're all contending with the potential gloominess of January. I last shared an Inside the Studio post with you back in early November. Perhaps you'll remember: I have recently taken up metalwork and I had plans of converting my under-the-stairs cupboard - aka the naughty hole - into a little work space.  There was a problem, however. Five years of accumulated junk and mess.

Well, it certainly seemed like a mammoth task. I was shocked just now, revisiting these pictures. A chance turn of events lead to me actually taking it on. I was telling a friend about my plans, a friend who actively likes sorting and tidying (I know?!), and she said, 'Right, we're going to do it'. I can't thank her enough. It took two long afternoons-into-evenings-into-the-small-hours to sort it all, and it was pretty tough going and stressful at points: so many things to have to decide to throw away; so many, sometimes painful, memories unearthed. (Some of the stuff at the back had been dumped in there when I moved into the flat and that wasn't the best time of my life.) But we did it! Can you see the little pixie door? Where the metal working pixies live?

Open wide and what's inside....

I hope you'll agree, it's a pretty remarkable transformation! This is going to be the tidiest it will ever look, I reckon!  I'm so chuffed; I've only just got to the point where I've stopped going in and turning on the light and just thinking, 'Eeeeeeeeeee!' One thing I hadn't remembered was that the naughty hole was actually an airing cupboard.

My first thought on seeing this beast (which actually serves all the flats in the damn building) was: 'Oh, thank goodness! That's several square foot of stuff I'm not going to have to drag out of here and and re-locate!' Once this relief had worn off I was a bit disappointed that it was lurking in there taking up precious space. Still, I reckon I'll live with it well enough.

So, it's now time to pick up the torch/saw/file/hammer, etc.  My classes started again last night. I'm making bezels for stones. I was working on my first one again this morning. I got to the stage where I had it looking all neatly trimmed and thought, 'Oooo, look, that looks like what it should look like! Will the stone fit nicely? Yes, it fits very nicely!' Hot on the heels of that thought came, 'Oooooo, look, is it? Yes, look, it is... it's.... stuck...'. I've tried finding something thin enough to lever it out, but nothing is thin enough. I've tried running water into it. I've tried tapping it on the back. I've tried tapping it on the back with a hammer. I've tried holding it in a pair of tweezers and hitting it on the back with a hammer. I've tried holding it in a pair of tweezers and hitting it on the back even harder with a heavier hammer. No joy. It's only a small, inexpensive, piece of moss agate but if anyone has any suggestions, do share!

I would have got going on the metalwork earlier in the month but there was other stuff to do in the studio, like glazing a big batch of beads.

I'll be listing all of these in the bead shop some time at the start of February - just in time for pay day! I also had a heap of beady makes planned that I wanted to make real. It ended up being quite a make-athon. Here's a small selection.

Art beads by Something to do Beads

Art beads by 4 Ophelia and Lucy Haslam

These and many more can be found in my jewellery shop.

So, it's time for this week's giveaway! The prize will be - again! - a

There are two questions this week. First, the general one: What are your big - or not so big! - plans for your work in 2016? Do you want to learn a new skill, like me? Are you hoping to get your work out there in the world, in some galleries or shops? Perhaps you've been meaning to set up an online shop but have kept putting it off? Is now the time? Or maybe you just want to make a dent in your art bead collection and incorporate some of them in some great new designs? Will this be the year you finally make something with that awesome piece of treasure you've been hoarding?

And a second question: do you have a trick or tip that might help me free my cabochon from its bezel? (See above!) If anyone comes up with a suggestion that actually works, they'll receive a little beady parcel too!

Beautiful Elements Book Giveaway

The other day I mentioned my new book, Beautiful Elements. Today we are giving away a signed copy of the book!

If you haven't had a chance to check out the book yet, I invite you to read Jean Yates book review.

"Beautiful Elements, is a mixed-materials jewelry-making project and technique book that teaches simple techniques using wire, metal, and polymer clay to enhance and personalize beaded jewelry. With thirty projects readers will learn how to create natural shapes from metal, “sketch” with a hammer to create clever designs, and transform bits of polymer clay and wire into adornments. The book will cover how to make simple findings like handcrafted earring wires, chain, and toggle clasps."

I wrote this book for the jewelry maker who is ready to go beyond bead stringing and learn to create their own unique focals and findings. I use simple tools and easy methods for taking your jewelry to the next level.

Each chapter starts out with a technique or design, like the copper oak leaves here and polymer clay acorn headpins. And then I created several pieces of jewelry using those elements in different sizes and variations to show you just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to design possibilities. There is a subtle lesson in the book on how to create collections of jewelry by using repeating design elements to unify your creations.

By the way, this is my favorite project in the book!

The polymer clay in the book is super easy and geared for beginners. The ones here were inspired by Wedgwood pottery. Polymer clay is not the main focus of the book, but you will learn some basic techniques to create fun beads to compliment your metal work.

I have a free project using the Wedgwood bead featured in Beautiful Elements. You can make your own beads or find them in the Etsy shop for this project. 5th Day of Christmas: Eternal Summer Bracelet.

To win a copy of the book take a moment to share this giveaway on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. Leave a comment to let me know you've shared and then use the Rafflecopter widget to officially enter the drawing. One random winner will be picked and announced on December 23rd.  Good luck!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hoooooooo.... I feel like I'm coming to the end of a marathon. After days and days of photo-editing and listing drafting, I'm finally in a position to add new things to both my shops - new beads, new jewellery.  I added lots of new beads to my Etsy shop last night. Here's just a selection.

(Apologies for the grey tinge to some of the photos - terrible photography weather here recently!)

I've been doing lots of slip-decorating of porcelain...

...and trying to master forming a cone cap:

More porcelain here. I just love it with cobalt oxide:

As ever, I've made plenty of earring pairs...

...and I'm still loving lilies and leaves:

These bead sets are a new thing. I spent ages building up layers of different colours and marks, subtle variations in shades, and a range of textures.

Here are a few more bead sets.

What else? Headpins:

Naive / primitive face cubes

And also these big ol' thorn focals:

They were inspired by some wooden beads I bought recently from Pine Needles Sweet Grass

Cool, hey? They're so wonderful. However, I had imagined they'd be bigger and chunkier and might work as focal in a big necklace. (I always forget to look at measurements when I order things!) The thorns I bought will be great in earrings and more delicate necklaces but I was set on having some big thorn-like necklace focals. So, I tried making some. I hope my ceramic pieces diverge from their inspiration enough not to seem like a rip off!

And finally, on the bead front, some more of these old favourites -

Some of these pieces have sold but there's still lots to be snapped up in the shop.

But, I also mentioned new jewellery. Here are just a few of the new pieces I've made - there are many, many more. Of course, they feature lots of art beads.

hand-painted wood - Graceful Willow

feather rounds - Blueberribeads; faceted round - Something to do Beads

ceramic building - Jubilee; ceramic cog and spike - Marsha Neal; ceramic stick pendant - Scorched Earth

ceramic drop - Scorched Earth

copper bead - Joanne Tinley; ceramic coin - Something to do Beads; bingo chip clasp - Amanda Davie

Now I've bombarded you with visuals, it's time for the giveaway. Up for grabs today? A $15 of credit  to spend in either my bead shop or my jewellery shop. The question? What new things are you going to be working on this weekend? - or next week? - or when you first have opportunity? Just answer in a comment and you'll be in with a chance of winning!

Bye for now, Claire

*****************************************

After spending much of the coldest February in history inside the house and not going to my studio,i.e temps hardly every climbing about 0 degrees and sinking much lower at night--about -20 degrees F- -30 degrees F, I was thrilled when my friend  Mary Ann Evans contacted me for an Art Party in her ceramic studio!! What a great way to combat the winter blues!!

The  party began with a gourmet lunch prepared by Mary Ann:  a delicious cheddar and jalapeno dip, a salad with raw veggies, feta cheese and a yummy balsamic dressing, fish baked with fresh herb, a spicy soup  and fresh fruit and homemade cookies for desert!! Wow!!  Then this delightful group of 6 artists moved into Mary Ann's  wonderful, warm, bright ceramic studio.

She had set up tables covered with heavy canvas mats,

pugged some wonderful porcelain clay

made us a delicious bowl of slip,

put out supplies and pots for us to decorate

And set us free!!
The stereo was playing and Mary Ann was at the wheel ready to give us each a lesson in throwing a pot.

As the beat of Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk flowed, some of us put down our clay work and danced!
Together and making art, we were all joyful, happy, and breaking out of the winter blues.

What we made has been captured in this collage

The afterglow of the party has been following all of us around and everyone is madly back at work in our  home studios and miraculously, the weather has broken and Spring is just about here!!!

Here is what I have been making

some pendants
                                                                Birds
Hollow beads--this one begun at the Art Party

Hand built flower pendants

                                        Maple Wing Stick Pendant

I hope to  have some of my new work in my Etsy shop next week.  This is Sales Tax time in New York State.   Enough said!!

In addition to working in my studio, I have been helping out with the launching of the new Ceramic Art Bead Market.  This is an exciting auction marketplace for ceramic art beads of original design. Anyone is welcome to join.   Right now I am hosting a 2 day giveaway(ends on March 15 at Midnight)  so I hope you will get yourself approved to join in and leave a comment on my post.  Here is the pendant I am giving away.

Now for my question:  What do you do to get rid of the winter blues? Leave a comment below( even if you didn't  have the winter blues)  and you will be entered to win one of my flower pendants.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.
