Inspired by Nature Retreat

Do you have a mission in life?  A guiding principal that helps you focus and leads your creative efforts?

I have a mission, it's to inspire those around me.

Sometimes it's doing something big like starting the Art Bead Scene blog and inspiring jewelry designers and beadmakers to connect.  Other times, it's writing a book that shares my inspirations and helps jewelry makers to find their inspirations.  It may be offering unique beads to inspire a new jewelry project or a tutorial shared online.  I love sharing trends, color palettes and business tips to help others along their journey as a designer.

But what I love the most out of everything I do, is directlly inspiring students in a classroom! Nothing is quite as satisfying as seeing students discover and explore the creative possibilities with your projects.  My favorite event that I host, the one where I feel like I'm most accomplishing my mission in life, is at my annual Inspired by Nature Retreat.

This year will be my third event.  In both years past there have been moments where we are enjoying the retreat together and I think to myself, is this my life?  This is like a dream! How am I so lucky to be with such creative women, sharing my favorite inspirations and in the place I love most in the world?  Those are amazing days.  I wish I could do a retreat every month!  Maybe someday I will travel around sharing my inspirations across the country and the world.  For now, it's a once a year shindig and you are invited to join me.

It's a small event, this year only 15 students can be accommodated and spaces are filling up.  If a weekend in the woods surround by the beauty of autumn, a river and a resort lodge sound inviting and playing with metal, wire and clay creating those projects shown above sounds like a little slice of heaven to you - head on over to the website and read the details. Come October, I may be inspiring you and being inspired by you!

Tips for Picking, Prepping and Partaking in a Bead Retreat

This article first appeared on the Soft Flex Newsletter

As the planner of an annual Bead Cruise and Inspired by Nature Bead Retreat here are my top tips for retreat participants.

Retreats are held across the county and around the world with classes that offer something for everyone. With so many choices there are some things to consider when picking your perfect event. Packing and preparing for the retreat can ensure a better experience and once you arrive there are a few things you can do make sure you have a retreat that will inspire you for years to come.

Picking an Event:

Classes: Retreats can range from local instructors sharing basic techniques to nationally known instructors teaching original designs. Are classes offered ala carte or will everyone take the same classes? If classes were ala carte and instructors are selling kits or books this a great way to get more mileage out of your event.

If you are taking an advanced class, know the basic prerequisites before signing up or you could face frustration during the event. Will you finish the project in class, do you want to walk out with finished work or will you be motivated to work on them when you return home.

Size: Do you want to join a larger regional event with a few hundred people or do you want a quieter and more personal experience that a smaller retreat will offer? Whether it's a big or small event, you'll connect with talented and giving creative spirits during the retreat.

Budgets: Sometimes it may be practical considerations like the cost and travel expenses that steer you to an event. You’ll need to budget in materials or kits. Will you need to invest in new tools or materials to take the classes? Are meals included? Will there be chances to shop with the instructors or a vendor?

Style: Are you a mixed media maven or seed bead obsessed? There are retreats just for you! Are you a nature girl and want a chance to explore the relationship between jewelry and the places you are visiting ? there is a retreat just for you! Are you looking for a laid back event that focuses on creativity or do you like a more structured event? Visit websites to get a feel for an event. And join their Facebook pages to get to know the promoters and other people planning to attend.

Going Solo or Bring a Friend: You'll have completely different experiences for each scenario. Don't be afraid to go to an event alone, you will make friends before the end of the weekend and you won't be alone for long.
Packing and Preparing.

Packing: Along with the supply lists for your classes, bring the required tools, a portable beading mat, an OTT Lite if you work with seed beads and an extension cord if you bring a light. Bring business cards or postcards, and a few of your creations for networking. Pack comfortable shoes and clothes you wouldn't mind getting messy during class. An energy-packed snack and a bottle of water can go a long way while you are busy creating!

Inspiration: A camera and notebook will help you capture your inspirations during the weekend and make notes that you might forget in all the excitement of the event.

Before the Event: The retreat experience can start long before the event. Check out the Facebook page or message board group dedicated to the retreat and make a few buddies before you travel.

During the Retreat

Relax: Once you get your bearings on a retreat and the festivities have begun your first job is to relax. Yes, relaxing is job one for you! It's so easy to feel like you have to perform during a class or wow everyone with your creativity, but you don't! Being a student can be a frustrating process, it's hard to learn something new. So don't expect perfection from your class projects. The first project you create with a new technique is practice. If it's a great class, you'll have a new technique you'll be able to perfect and adapt to your own work. So don't put too much pressure on yourself.

Speak Up: Don't be afraid to ask questions if you need help from the instructor ? that's why they are there!
Don't be shy during a retreat! You have something in common with everyone there. Beads unite all! You'll get so much more out of your retreat by interacting with your fellow students. If you are feeling shy, just make a comment about someone's jewelry and you'll be laughing and sharing in no time. Exchange business cards and stay connected after the retreat.

Photos: Take tons of pictures of your event. Anything you find inspirational, snap a pic! Make sure you ask first before you take a photo of anyone else's work and understand they may decline your request.
Don't expect perfection, your retreat planner has gone to great lengths to pull off an amazing event - but things never go exactly as planned. Focus on the positive for the weekend and if there is an issue, go directly to the planner to resolve it so you can get on with having fun!

Registration is open for my next Inspired by Nature Bead Retreat.  Check out all the details here.

Inspired by Nature Retreat

From the editor of the Art Bead Scene:

To celebrate the release of my upcoming book, Jewelry Designs from Nature, I've put together a three day bead retreat focused on the themes of the book: the woodlands, garden and sea.  I'll share my creative secrets for tapping into the beauty of nature and translating that inspiration into jewelry.

We'll explore a different theme each day with classes and mini-workshops in a beach house right across from Lake Michigan!  Join me on three related field trips to awaken your senses to the design lessons offered by Mother Nature.  An Inspiration Scavenger Hunt will lead you through creative prompts to translate the retreat experience into your jewelry creations when you return home.

Walk along the sandy shores, marvel at the delights of the garden and discover the magic of a quiet forest as you relax, connect and create in the resort town of South Haven, Michigan on September 16 - 18.  Space is limited, don't delay!

Bead & Button Recap

2011 Bead & Button Show is an art bead paradise!  Some of the top beadmakers in the country and beyond displayed their wares.  I wish I could visit every booth and beadmaker - but there are just so many.  Thankful there is a printed program to visit the ones online that I missed.  Here were a few of my favorites this year:
Kerri Fuhr is always on my list to visit.  Her amazing beads are a sight to behold and even more amazing in person.  This year she had these little birds perched and ready to sing - love them.  She also has a new line of butterfly pendants.  Visit Kerri's website at http://www.kerrifuhr.com/.
Stephanie Ann Designs shares a booth with Kerri, so of course you have to see what's new with Stephanie!  Stephanie's work has a very beachy theme with tide pools of glass starfish, handblown glass beads and matte glass disk beads that remind me of beach glass.

Polymer clay artist Pam Wynn had a beautiful range of earthy beads and an exciting line up of new brighter colors.  She also offers pendants from her daughter, Heather Wynn.  You can find Pam's beads in her Etsy shop and Heather's work in her Etsy shop.

I had the pleasure of meeting Heidi, the designer behind Lillly Pilly.  It's so nice to meet the people behind the creations.  Heidi and her helper Jodi create all the work from Lilly Pilly, which features engraved shell pendants in intricate designs inspired from nature. They are offering two new collections of metal sheets, one collection is embossed and patina brass and copper.  The other collection is printed aluminium in geometric patterns.  Both can be used to create pendants and bead caps.  Check out their work at http://www.lillypillydesigns.com/.

I love Julie Nordine's work, you'll find her under the business name Credit River Art Glass.  She makes the most amazing glass acorns with electroplated acorn caps and lampwork beads.  You'll also find etched copper leaves and new this year were enameled copper leaves.  Julie has an enchanting color sense, all earthy and organic.  You can see more of her work at http://www.creditriverartglass.com/.

My favorite find from the show was Vintage Meadow Artworks created by Heather French.  Heather hand colors lucite in the most amazing color palettes.  I couldn't get enough of her work.  She will be opening an online shop soon and when she does I will be the first to let you know!

I also enjoyed meeting Sak from Saki Silver - who by the way had a table full of bronze metal pieces.  If silver has you sticker shocked check out their collection of alternatives in the dark, rich color of bronze.  If you don't know Mellisa's lampwork from Sea of Glass, I recommend heading over to her website.  I will share more of her work soon, she had the coolest new beads.

And it's not all art beads, I loved visiting with the girls at the Vintaj booth - they were during demos of their new embossing system on metal blanks - so easy and fun.  And Sara Hardin from Soft Flex was showing off a make-and-take project.

I was at the show for 4 days so this is just a small sample of the beadmakers that I was able to visit.  I loved seeing what was new at Green Girl Studio, Lisa Peters, Diane Hawkey, Earthenwood Studios, MakuStudio, Golem Beads and many more!

I made a quick video with my ipod of our row, filled with beadmakers.  The show was dazzling, overflowing with all the treasures of beady dreams.  Now to pull out the goodies from the show and create some new jewelry.

Bead & Button Survival Guide

bead & button 2010

1. Set a budget.

2. Laugh at that budget.  Set aside just enough money to get home and come to peace with spending all the rest.

3. Have a huge sale in your Etsy shop the week of the show! (Like these guys.)

4. Don't bring a friend - you'll buy twice as much because she'll find all these amazing things you'll have to have too. (And if you have two friends with you - forgetta about.)

5. Bring a healthy snack, water and wear comfortable shows.

6. Bring a big bag. Bring a rolling suitcase.  (Can you bring those to the show?  I can't remember.  Okay, stick with the big bag.  But there will be a moment during the show when you turn to that friend and say, "We're gonna need a bigger bag." ala the crazy man from Jaws.)

7. Have a show strategy - visit the beadmakers first - they have limited stock and sell out of things!  And take a minute to meet artists who are your creative heros!  Next visit booths with hard to find items like Czech glass, resin beads and decorative chain. Watch demos and join in any make-and-takes.  (Booths that usually have demos are Vintaj, Soft Flex and Beaducation.)

Stop by booth #1212 to visit me at HumblebeadsHere is a little coupon for you!

These are the booths I'll be visiting - in no particular order:

Melanie Strikes Gold (and Silver) at Faerie Con

Recently, I attended a show of a different kind for me. I spend a lot of time at bead and jewelry shows, but I heard there was a convention centered around Faeries and Fantasy art in Philadelphia, and my brother just moved there, so we packed up and flew off to FaerieCon!

This was the sort of convention filled with artisans and artists, and fanciful things...not too different from a bead show there. But one of the main differences was that many attendees and vendors came all decked out in costumes. Here is me as an earthy, bird like faerie: Of course my costume would not have been complete without a fabulously ornate necklace fit for a faerie, so I crafted this one for myself with Vintaj findings and my porcelain art beads. But if you know me, I am a true beader at heart, so it wasn't hard for me to sniff out the beads at this event. And I came home with some real beady treasures that I want to share with you:

mmmmm...look at my *precious*.... The little treasure above is a coveted Green Girl Studios one of a kind silver/polymer/resin creation. And she is all mine! I saw a few of these at Bead & Button, but before I could even get to the booth, *poof* they were all gone. The nice thing about seeing Green Girl at Faerie Con for me was that I got my pick of some of the more unusual treasures they have that I can never get to in time. I love her, and I expect to do something really neat with her.

Here is Greg from Green Girl, hamming it up Gelfling style. He looked great, and the handcrafted double flute in his hands actually worked! He won first place in the costume contest! Andrew from Green Girl, showed me some new beads, including the gold plated mermaid beads below, which came home with me. It's funny, I almost never use gold. I am a silver gal, sometimes copper. But I have been very tempted by the raw brass findings that are available now, so I have added that to my vocabulary. I made the Faerie Con necklace with them. So I guess I need to take the plunge into gold now too. These pieces will make it easier, because they are so beautiful.

Next I will show you the silver treasures I got at Faerie Con. I had read the show list and was excited to learn that NeoMythica was going to be there! I had seen the ads in the bead magazines before and their website, so I was excited to see these great items in person! And I was pleased to meet Margaret, the artist behind the designs. The booth was filled with jewelry, very beautiful and elaborate jewelry, which was a sight to behold. But I came for the exquisite clasps. I have a thing for artist findings, what can I say? So I saw the collection, and carefully chose these four clasp designs below. I made a very serious attempt to think of the bead/component from my line that would work well with them, so I have paired them up here to show you my thought process. I stole the great pics from the NeoMythica site , hope they don't mind! By the way, they have an incredibly beautiful website! Go there NOW! ooh, there are things that I didn't even see at the show that I want now, like the bails and some of the charms and the cones! I could get in real trouble...

One of my friends has put dragons in my head recently, so this clasp was probably the first to grab me. I am thinking of pairing it with my goth and vamp wings, which I will likely make into links. Or maybe keep them as charms, I don't know. Maybe I need to do a bat...

I love this fairy clasp. I can see a tassel making up a skirt below her upper torso. I figured I could pick up some colors of one of my fairies.

Oh, I love this one! A flying heart. I think it will go great with reds and silver and my big flying heart pendant. I hope to add these big pendants to my website soon.

This is just a really nicely designed viney clasp with leaves. I don't think I have shown my newest colors of acorns and pinecones before, so here they are. I added them to my website a couple of weeks ago...

So the moral of this post is to keep your beady sense aware where-ever you go. You might find art beads in some of the most unusual places.
